History of Ulhasnagar

Ulhasnagar, which is located on coast of the West India, is in the Thane district of Maharashtra State. This city possesses remains of the historical culture of India that reveal the rich heritage of the country. Ulhasnagar didn’t actually exist during the medieval ages, when India was fighting against British for independence. But, after independence, this city could become a part of every developments India has faced.

Ulhasnagar, which is more than 65 years old, was a colony of migrants in the aftermath of the partition of India in 1947. If it was a barren land once, now this city has developed into a rich town of Maharashtra. The city was also a military camp and housed about 7,000 soldiers and thousands other personnel from the Second World War. About 1500 military personnel stayed in more than 2000 barracks, majority of which had large central halls with rooms attached to either end.

History of Ulhasnagar

Ulhasnagar as Refugees Camp

Ulhasnagar was actually vacant after the war and it was again occupied during the partition of India. The camp acted as a ready and commercial ideal ground for partition victims including Sindhis, who started a life in the new land. As a result of partition, the Sindhi state on India became a part of Pakistan and many Sindhis had to left their homes and come on the side of Bombay un-willingly. Sindhis, who have no money in their hands, had to live in this city looking ot the situation Indian Government decided to allot them the Sindhunagar camp.

Around 100,000 Sindhi refugees reached these military camps situated few kilometers from Kalyan Most of them expected that this would be a temporary arrangement and they lived there with a hope that they would go back to their native land. But, their hope had to end up as their dream and they slowly start to be adjusted to live in this land. In 1949, C Rajagopalachari, the then Governor-general of India, converted the area into a township where Sindhis started re-inventing their lost home and business.

Growth of Ulhasnagar

The financial support the Sindhis got from India Government was very less. But, they could survive in this new land and succeeded their life with their hard work. They have significant role in bringing up the early profits of Ulhasnagar. Illegal construction was a major issue faced by Ulhasnagar during its early years. This was because the free land was available and the Government was not much alert to help the refugees. Some years ago Government ordered to demolish the illegal buildings in Ulhasnagar, But as a result of the day and night effort of Pappu Kalani, a famous politician in the city, the order that legalizes all illegal buildings was passed, which helps many people from becoming homeless.

The speed of development process in Ulhasnagar increases with the formation of Ulhasnagar Municipality in 1960. Now, this city is within the Mumbai Conurbation, even though the town lies outside Mumbai city. At present, Ulhasnagar with 28 square kilometre area has 389,000 Sindhi people, the largest enclave of Sindhis in the country. Now, this city is one of the important exporters of jeans, fabrics, clothes all over the world.
